Anatomical Models for Teaching Bovine Auscultation & Palpation:

(Models developed for instruction of veterinary students in the art of rectal palpation and auscultation/percussion techniques using life‑sized simulated internal body organs.)  A case description is provided to the student for each model:    

     1.   Cow with a Cecal Torsion:  the student must recognize the following simulated body organs by tactile sense alone:  pelvic brim, uterus, ovaries, rumen, left kidney, displaced cecum.

     2.   Cow with Left Displaced Abomasum:  the student must percuss the left paralumbar fossa of the cow model and detect the "ping" characteristic of a left displaced abomasum.

Visiting Scholar from the Catholic University of Argentina :  Mr. Norberto Belisle, an Animal Scientist, (Jan 1 -Mar 31, 1996) to study Dairy Production Medicine with Dr. Jacobsen.  Mr. Belisle assisted with a Mastitis research project, audited courses, and accompanied Dr. Jacobsen on dairy farm calls.  He returned Aug - Dec, 1997, to study dairy management on U.S. dairies, under Dr. Jacobsen's guidance.

 

OTHER STUDENT RESEARCH PROJECTS ADVISED:

 

"Heat stress modification of a Northeastern Dairy Farm," project by Christopher Potter (UGA Vet School Class of 98).  This project was designed by a veterinary student under Dr. Jacobsen's direction. Two grant proposals were submitted, one to the Geraldine Dodge Foundation and one to the Monsanto Co.  The project was partially funded by a grant from the Monsanto Co.  Chris Potter spent the summer on his family's farm in Connecticut installing fans and sprinklers and making barn modifications to improve cow comfort and reduce heat stress.  Dr. Jacobsen attended a weekend Protiva Field Day on the Potter farm in Connecticut for the local dairymen to witness the benefits of such improvements.  Publication resulted.
